What are we tracking?

We are tracking capital investments made by the private sector in Brandon (such does not include investments by public institutions such as the City of Brandon, Prairie Mountain Health, Brandon School Division, Brandon University, or Assiniboine Community College.)

How are we measuring this?

Each month, we review the building permits issued by the City of Brandon's Planning & Buildings Department to find all private capital investments and tally up the investments. In addition, through confidential conversations with private business, we identify investments made in the reporting year that are not included in building permits and tally up those investments. The two figures are then added together to create our monthly metric.

What progress are we making?

Annually, private capital investments average between $45 to $60 million. Investment levels reported vary month-to-month, as we group private investments not captured in building permits in order to avoid reporting in a manner that identifies which company in Brandon is making investments and what level of investments is attributable to them. Capital investments by the private sector is one method of following the overall well-being of the economy.
