Crime Against Persons
What are we tracking?
The Brandon Police Service records all crimes against persons. These include homicides, attempted murders, sexual offences, assaults, robbery, uttering threats, forcible confinement and other deprivation of freedom offences, extortion, intimidation, criminal harassment, harassing communications, disregard for human life and abandoning child.
How are we measuring this?
These offences are recorded in our records management system called PROS (Police Reporting Occurrence System). These incidents are compiled into a report on a monthly basis. (Note: These numbers are based on the total calls received, not the number of charges laid).
What progress are we making?
In 2017, the total number of calls the Brandon Police Service received pertaining to crimes against persons was 954.
As of September 30th, 2018, the Brandon Police Service has received 770 of these types of calls. Compared to this period in 2017, the City of Brandon has seen a 9.07% increase in property related crimes.
Projections based on these numbers imply that by the end of 2018, the City of Brandon could see a 7.58% spike in crimes against persons.
The Brandon Police Service Executive utilizes this information as part of intelligence-led policing initiatives. When spikes in crimes against persons are identified, the most suitable strategies and operational directives are always developed, including:
• Enhanced patrols in high-target areas
• Other Police initiatives (that will not be disclosed for operational security reasons)
